About SwiftOtter
SwiftOtter is an eCommerce agency based in the Midwest, building and optimizing experiences across BigCommerce, Adobe Commerce, and Shopify since 2012.
We are a small agency with deep technical roots, built by design.
Built for Complex eCommerce
Most eCommerce projects have a straightforward path. You pick a platform, configure it, launch it, and iterate. SwiftOtter handles those projects, but the work we are most known for is the kind that does not follow that path. The merchants who find us are usually dealing with something more layered: a B2B pricing structure that does not map to standard platform logic, an ERP integration that has to stay stable as the business changes, a regulated industry with real compliance requirements baked into the UX, or a product catalog that needs custom configurator logic built from the ground up.
Our experience in the industry has shaped how we hire, how we scope, and how we operate. The result is a team that is smaller and more deliberate than most agencies our age, and a client list that reflects merchants who needed a partner with genuine technical depth, not just execution capacity.
The Work We Do
SwiftOtter builds, extends, and optimizes commerce experiences across BigCommerce, Adobe Commerce, and Shopify. Our work spans custom development, complex systems integrations, B2B and manufacturer commerce, product discovery, and platform migrations. We also work with merchants on strategy, helping them make sound decisions about platforms, architecture, and long-term commerce direction before a single line of code is written.
The projects that come to us most often involve some degree of complexity that a standard implementation does not account for: an ERP that needs to connect cleanly to the storefront, a catalog that requires custom configurator logic, a regulated industry with compliance requirements built into the UX, or a B2B operation with pricing and account structures that platforms do not handle natively.

eCommerce Services and Platform Capabilities
BigCommerce, Adobe Commerce, and Shopify Development
SwiftOtter holds preferred or specialized partnerships with BigCommerce, Adobe Commerce, and Shopify. Our work on all three goes well beyond standard builds. We extend platform functionality, build custom modules and integrations, make architecture decisions that account for how a merchant's business will grow, and step in when a previous implementation needs to be stabilized or rebuilt. Platform knowledge at this level takes years to develop, and it is one of the reasons merchants come to us for projects that other agencies have declined or struggled with.
BigCommerce Preferred Partner
We believe in BigCommerce's ability to deliver eCommerce effectively. They are leading the charge in bringing new technology to this space.
Adobe Commerce Specialized Partner
We have worked on Adobe projects since the very beginning of our existence. We know them like the back of our hands—we even trained almost 10,000 developers.
Shopify Partner
Shopify is the most capable and supported eCommerce platform on the market and we are pleased to offer our services in this area.
A Team with Real Platform Expertise
SwiftOtter developers hold certifications across BigCommerce, Adobe Commerce, and Shopify. On Adobe Commerce (Magento) specifically, our team has contributed to writing the certification exams themselves, and our training program has helped close to 10,000 developers get certified. That investment in platform knowledge is not separate from the agency work. It reflects how seriously we take technical depth, and it is part of what makes our code reviews, architecture decisions, and implementation choices meaningfully different from what you get at a generalist agency.
Technology Partners
How SwiftOtter Started
SwiftOtter was founded by Joseph Maxwell, who built his first eCommerce shopping cart at 15 years old. It was rough by today's standards, but it processed mid-six figures in transactions for early clients, and it set something in motion that has driven the agency ever since.
Years later, while working with his family's print brokering company, Joseph helped one of their clients migrate off an outdated platform onto Magento. That migration led to a more ambitious project: a custom military awards configurator for Marlow White Uniforms that let customers configure and order personalized awards online. Nothing like it existed at the time. It pointed directly toward the kind of technically demanding, merchant-specific work that SwiftOtter would go on to be known for.
Joseph achieved every available Magento certification along the way, and when Magento 2 certifications launched in 2018, he began sharing his preparation materials publicly. That grew into the training program that has since helped close to 10,000 developers get certified.
SwiftOtter became its own entity in 2016. Jesse Maxwell joined the team shortly after, and the agency has grown steadily from there, always with the same orientation: take on work that requires genuine expertise, be honest about what it will take, and build things that hold up.
What We Believe
Hospitality
For us, hospitality is not about being agreeable. It is about being genuinely invested in the outcomes of the people we work with. That means being proactive when we see something a client should know, following through on what we commit to, and making the experience of working with SwiftOtter worth repeating. We want our clients to look forward to their next conversation with our team.
Virtue
We tell the truth. That includes telling a client when their plan has a problem, when a timeline is not realistic, or when a different approach would serve them better. We make mistakes like any team, and when we do, we own them and fix them. Putting the client's interests at the center of the conversation is not a policy for us. It's just how we work.
Innovation
Strong standard practices are the baseline, not the ceiling. We pay close attention to where platforms, tooling, and customer expectations are heading, and we think about what that means for the merchants we serve before they have to ask. The goal is to be ahead of the relevant shifts, not scrambling to catch up with them.
The SwiftOtter Name
We're often asked about the origin of our company name.
The animal half came from our founder Joseph, who has a genuine fondness for otters. In an industry where animal-named platforms have a certain tradition, it just felt right. Otters are among the few animals known to use tools, they are adaptable and deliberate, and that describes how we try to approach technical work: reading the situation carefully and choosing the right approach rather than reaching for the default one.
The Swift half is more straightforward: Timelines are critical, and project delivery matters. We take both seriously.
