How do I get a Magento 2 / Adobe Commerce certification?

Joseph shares everything you need to know to achieve a great result.

If you want to get your Adobe Commerce certification, you have found the right place. We have helped almost 10,000 people get certified. This page covers everything you need to know about getting certified.

Hi there! It looks like you're considering getting a Magento 2 certified? That's a fantastic step in your career, great work!

I have built accelerated courses and study materials to quickly help you get that certification. Through my efforts since 2018, I've helped almost 10,000 people get certified—and you can join the ranks, too. We also have a generous international discount program. Head on over to our certification page to learn more, or see the links below.

The "Magento" certification program has been in place since roughly 2010. It has taken various forms since then and is now part of the Adobe certification family. There are three levels of certification: Professional, Expert and Master. Professional is the "easiest" (but still not easy). Unfortunately, Professional certifications cannot be renewed at this point; you must retake the exam after the certification expires. If you can achieve Expert or Master certification, you easily renew your certification.

What are the benefits to getting certified?

You unlock the complexities of Adobe Commerce.

Adobe Commerce is a beast of an application. After years of competition, there are aspects in which other platforms still haven't matched. Magento 2 users expect a lot, and they are not happy if you recommend they have a feature custom-built that already exists.

You can direct merchants to using existing features. I have had plenty of conversations with merchants who find out that a part a previous company built comes built into Magento. A development company sold a merchant Magento 2 with the B2B suite and then purchased and installed the Amasty B2B suite. They continue to pay monthly for the B2B suite. This is a great way to turn off merchants, and I don't recommend it.

People immediately understand your value.

We only have a little time to make an impression on our clients. Initial perspective is made within 30 seconds or less. You can subtly show off your certification if you have email exchanges or LinkedIn communications before this conversation.

Adobe allows certified people to use their branding to bring clout to your name through certification badges. You are seen as someone who has invested into your career by achieving this certification. Only some will know the effort required to pass the test. But you are "setting the table" and will continue building on it with your intelligent and valuable answers.

Expert/Master certifications count toward your agency's Adobe Commerce specialization.

Expert and Master certifications count to your specialization. Due to the large numbers, this specialization is challenging to achieve. SwiftOtter has it, thanks to our consistent drive to get our team certified (we are 100% certified).

Finding your next job is easier.

Out of the thousands of Magento practitioners worldwide, relatively few are certified. Having a certification on your record is the easiest way to stand out in the crowd. You will likely have recruiters knocking on your door after you indicate you are certified on your LinkedIn profile. You could have worse problems.

What certifications are available?

There are three levels of certification: Professional, Expert and Master. Master is, as you would guess, tough.

There are three job descriptions of certification: Business Practitioner (previously, Solution Specialist), "Backend" Developer and Frontend Developer.

Professional

If you have yet to pass an Adobe certification, start here.

The Professional lineup of tests is designed for practitioners with six months to a year of experience. I find that, given effort, you can shorten this timeframe. These questions are much less scenario-based and focus on remembering features and names. You will still encounter code on developer-related tests, but it won't be complex. If we were to apply a difficulty system of 1-5 on these tests ("1" being the easiest questions), 50% of the test is likely to be a "2" with the remaining 50% split between "1" and "3".

Don't be fooled, a person with no experience on Magento would not be able to pass this test just by guessing. Preparation is of utmost importance.

Test Name Questions Est. Difficulty Time Pass Score
AD0-E712 Professional Business Practitioner 50 2/10 1 hour and 40 minutes 60%
AD0-E717 Professional Developer 77 2/10 2 hours and 37 minutes 65%
AD0-E719 Frontend Developer 50 2/10 1 hour and 40 minutes 62%
  • Professional Business Practitioner, AD0-E712: This is for those on the business/non-technical side of the house. You are expected to know a little about marketing and much about the Magento admin.
  • Professional Developer with Cloud, AD0-E717: This is your foot in the door if you're a backend developer. Cloud questions are on the test, so you must give this extra study. If you get a 80% score on this test, we recommend studying for a few weeks and then taking the Expert Developer test. You are likely to pass. You need to know concepts like dependency injection, layout XML, blocks, templates, and store configuration.
  • Frontend Developer, AD0-E719: While the Expert Frontend Developer test isn't that difficult, this is a good starting place. You will be expected to have a good foundation in Javascript and Knockout. You will be tested about layout XML, templates, and LESS.

Expert

These tests are nothing short of hard to pass. You should expect to fail on your first attempt (that is, unless you are using one of our study materials).

Adobe states that you should have 1-3 years of experience before considering this test. We've seen people pass with less experience, but the compensating factor is the time you are willing to invest.

If you consider a 1-5 difficulty system ("1" being the easiest questions), 50% of the test is likely to be a "3.5".

These tests feature many scenario-based questions. A scenario question presents information and a problem. It is capped by a question. You are to select the best answer given the problem and the question. The answer is unlikely to be easily understandable. Some questions are a paragraph long. Some answers feature several lines of code. You may be asked to analyze a segment of code. You may be asked how to solve a particular problem.

Test Name Questions Est. Difficulty Time Pass Score
AD0-E708 Business Practitioner 50 8/10 1 hour and 40 minutes 62%
AD0-E716 Developer with Cloud 69 6/10 2 hours and 18 minutes 59%
AD0-E720 Frontend Developer 50 5/10 1 hour and 40 minutes 66%
  • Business Practioner, AD0-E708: This is one of the more difficult tests in the lineup. We see few pass this on the first try, unless they take a systematized approach to study. You need to be able to determine solutions for real-world scenarios. You will be tested about everything Magento plus systems integration, GDPR, taxes and marketing concepts.
  • Expert Developer with Cloud, AD0-E716: If you're a developer, you're end goal is likely this exam. Few have achieved this mark because it's tough. You need to know backend development like the back of your hand (pun intended).
  • Frontend Developer, AD0-E720: This is what you need to achieve eventually. In our experience, this is not as difficult as the backend edition.

Master Series

The toughest exams are the Master series. The good news is there is only one of these tests—Master Architect.

This features the most difficult questions in the lineup. You must have deep knowledge of every area of Adobe Commerce. Don't be disappointed if your first attempt results in failure.

If you consider a 1-5 difficulty system ("1" being the easiest questions), 50% of the test is likely to be a "4.25".

Study for this exam is laborious because their syllabus is vague. In other words, you need to be a master of everything Magento, and you don't know what will be tested. Consider your first take as yet another practice test, with the second take being the real try.

AD0-E722 Master Architect 50 10/10 1 hour and 40 minutes 60%

Discontinued

After Adobe purchased Magento, the test library was directly transferred to Adobe. Adobe has since rewritten the tests to cover Magento 2.4 and included Cloud.

What is the first Magento certification I should get?

A Professional-level test.

If you are a backend developer, start with AD0-E717. If you are a frontend Developer, AD0-E719 is your target. If you are on the business or marketing side of the house, AD0-E712 is your certification.

If you pass a professional-level test on your first try and you get 80%+ score, take a few weeks and continue studying. You are likely to achieve your expert-level certification easily.

What is the process to getting a developer certification?

The process is relatively simple, the amount of effort is significant.

  • Select your certification of choice.
  • Schedule your test. Set a deadline.
  • Review the syllabus in-depth. Consider a training course to expedite the knowledge transfer.
  • Practice, practice, practice. No, not practice tests (though they are valuable). Build modules. Review the admin. Don't just "read" the docs; prove your capability to implement what the docs are talking about.
  • Take a practice test. We at SwiftOtter have built practice tests for most Adobe certifications. Adobe has a free practice test for each of their exams. Don't look at the answers if they are available. Review your score by objective and study the areas that need improvement.
  • Take another practice test and look at the answers. This is your final remediation.
  • Take the test. If you fail, you aren't a failure. Reschedule as soon as you can.
  • Keep your certification renewed (this is everything you need to know about keeping your certification up-to-date).

Here's our secret ingredient.

Commit to study at least 15 minutes a day.

Otherwise, your story will resemble many others: "my study is on-and-off". Commit and follow through, spending extra time if you can. You'll succeed.

What about the Adobe practice tests?

Adobe has written a practice test for each certification exam. Use this as an additional tool. It's free so you can't go wrong. The downside is that they only have one pool of questions, so the capacity is limited.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to get certified?

  • Professional: worldwide is 125USD; India is 95USD.
  • Expert/Master: worldwide is 225USD; India is 150USD.

Adobe Partners get a 30% discount. Email your partner manager for discount coupon codes.

Can I take my test on the weekend?

Yes, you can take your test on Saturday or Sunday at no extra cost. However, if you schedule a test within 24 hours, you incur a $5.00 fee. Don't sweat it, if you're ready, you're ready and get that test under your belt.

Where do I go to schedule the test?

Go to the Adobe Certmetrics page here. You will be redirected to Adobe to login with your Adobe account.

How long does my certification last?

Adobe certifications last two years. At that point, you need to work through the straightforward renewal process.

How can I show off my certification?

You will be given a badge on Credly (here's my Credly page). You can add these badges to your LinkedIn profile.

In addition, if you buy a SwiftOtter course and then go to pass the related Adobe certification, you can show off your Trained by SwiftOtter badge: 2x the value.

How do I handle Cloud questions if I don't have Cloud experience?

Approximately 25% of the Professional and Expert tests are related to Cloud questions. You could try to get 100% on the non-Cloud questions and then hope for the guessing-average of 33% on the Cloud questions (if you select "A" on every test question, you'll get approximately 33%).

We offer a course that covers these Cloud subjects in the necessary depth (not too much, not too little). This course is designed to give you hands-on experience without actually giving you hands-on experience. You'll ace the Cloud-related questions after taking this course.

If you work for an agency, you should have a Cloud sandbox.

What happens if I fail the certification?

You're in good shape if you view your first attempt as an expensive practice test. In fact, you could do minimal study before taking your first test—do you pass? If you do, you just saved yourself hours of study.

You are required to wait 24 hours.

If you fail your second attempt, you must "cool down" for two weeks before attempting the test again.

Unfortunately, there are no discounts for retakes.

The mindset

I've talked to way too many people who are incredibly discouraged if they fail.

Worse, they then take a several week break before studying again.

Keep your foot on the gas. You tried and didn't quite make the mark. You are almost there. Keep pushing.

How long until my Adobe Commerce certification expires?

Your certification is good for two years. You can then renew it.

How much effort is it to get certified?

How much effort is it to get certified?

I'm asked this question regularly. It's hard to answer.

Adobe recommends exams based on experience. But, two years of experience doesn't mean the candidate has been completing complex-enough tasks.

If you are to self-assess, you have to be real with the difficulty of your accomplishments. This is likely an impossible task, so we break it down regarding practice test results.

Remember, if you look at the answers on a practice test, the test is useless for further assessment.

Professional-level practice test score

  • 30-50%: 30 minutes a day for 3-4 months. You are just starting out. This effort will massively boost your experience.
  • 51-70%: 15-30 minutes a day for 2-3 months. You're doing well and making progress.
  • 71%+: ideally 30 minutes a day for 2-3 weeks. You're there; just make sure to do some brushing up.

Expert-level practice test score

  • 30-50%: consider taking the Professional certification. Expect a significant investment of 30 minutes a day for 3-4 months. Consistency is your key to success.
  • 51-70%: 15-30 minutes a day for 2-3 months. You may already be in the range for success. SwiftOtter's tests are designed to be more difficult than the real test.
  • 71%+: what are you waiting for? Just take the damn test.

How do I get the Business Practitioner certification?

You are most-likely coming from a business/marketing background. The biggest hurdle we see is a lack of knowledge of the Magento admin and intricacies of workflows.

Here is what we recommend:

  • Review the study guide (Professional and Expert).
  • Take the practice test (SwiftOtter's and Adobe's).
  • Identify your weak areas. Create products. Adjust order statuses. Place orders. Fulfill them using in-store pickup. Review store configuration. Understand how credit memos work.
  • Work on the less-technical topics. Build a summary of GDPR and security-related topics. Understand how to configure taxes (bottle tax, sales tax and Value-Added Tax).
  • Take the test. You may fail. Consider the first attempt as your practice test.

What kind of questions should I expect on the test?

There are two types questions: memorization and scenario. Most questions are answered by one of three options. Some questions will have four or five checkboxes, of which you must select two or three correct answers. These do not get partial credit.

Memorization questions are easier as they requires you to memorize an answer. This might be "what are valid shipping methods included in Adobe Commerce"? Or, "what feature allows B2B customers to build lists of commonly-ordered products?".

Scenario questions are next-level. You have to take your knowledge of Adobe Commerce and uniquely apply that. The below questions are examples of scenario questions.

Professional test sample questions

You are working on the plugin for a method:

function methodA() {
    $this->variable = /** some code */;
}

Your goal is to change the value of $this->variable, which is a protected property of the class.

How do you do that using Magento plugins?

  • This can only be done via around plugins, since they provide a reference to "$this" variable which is interpreted in the context of the original object.
  • You must extend your plugin class from the original class, which allows you to use "$this" in the context of the plugin and access protected variables of the original object.
  • In all Magento plugins you only have a reference to the original object, which means you can't access protected variables directly. This task can only be achieved using public getter/setter method, if available. Otherwise you should select another customization technique.
  • This can be done via method injection supported by the Magento DI system. In di.xml, you should specify that your plugin expects a reference to "variable," and it will be injected as a last parameter of a plugin.

You are working on a website that sells glasses by prescription. There are many options that a customer has to choose before making an order. A merchant is suggesting to use native configurable products to implement this configuration.

What are the implications of this approach?

  • Configurable products is the right choice; this is exactly what they are designed for.
  • This is impossible to implement with configurable products because the number of configurable options is limited.
  • When using configurable, each combination of options corresponds to a separate simple product which results in significant database growth.
  • This will work as long as each configuration option has no more than five values; that is a limitation imposed by Magento.

Expert test sample questions

A merchant has two inventory stock sources configured: warehouse (default) and retail store. The warehouse has almost all inventory. There are also two stocks: one for the warehouse and one for the retail store.

They have two websites: B2C and B2B.

The merchant just emailed you saying they assigned both websites to both stocks. However, as they browse the front end, they notice that most products are showing out of stock.

What is the problem?

  • Websites are assigned to one stock.
  • The Magento caches need to be flushed.
  • Inventory must be configured per website.
  • The reserve quantity must be reduced.

On Adobe Commerce Cloud, you are experiencing unexpected behavior on Staging that is not occurring on lower level environments with an identical code state. You want to directly examine the contents of the Staging MySQL database.

Which action should you take before attempting to open an SSH tunnel with the Cloud CLI Tool tunnel:open command?

  • Generate a unique SSH key pair solely for tunneling and add this to your Cloud user’s keys.
  • Run magento-cloud tunnel:info to make sure that the local application can access the MySQL service via a relationship.
  • Run magento-cloud tunnel:list to make sure no tunnels are currently open.
  • SSH into the Staging environment and run vendor/bin/ece-tools tunnel:enable.
