Can you believe we are over halfway through 2024? While it might feel early to think about the holiday season and the associated shopping spree, now is actually the perfect time to plan how to encourage your customers to spend their money with you. Planning early—rather than in October or, heaven forbid, November—is crucial for capitalizing on the holiday rush.

In the ninth edition of the eCom Buzz, we’ll cover some critical security incidents and offer insights on how to avoid similar pitfalls, ensuring your eCommerce operations run smoothly and securely. Plus, we’ll touch on optimizing your eCommerce site to enhance customer experience and boost sales, especially as we gear up for the holiday season.

Security Incidents and Their Impact

Let’s dive in and discuss three significant security incidents that recently rocked the eCommerce world.

ComicSting Exploit

ComicSting was inadvertently highlighted by Adobe about two months ago when they released a patch to fix it. Unfortunately, their initial fix wasn’t comprehensive, and bad actors quickly exploited the vulnerability. Two patches later, the issue remains partially unresolved. This situation underscores the importance of having a vigilant and technically adept partner, like SwiftOtter, to navigate these murky waters and ensure your site is patched and secure promptly.

Shopify Third-Party App Breach

While Shopify itself wasn’t hacked, a significant third-party app within its ecosystem was. This incident emphasizes the importance of minimizing your digital footprint by limiting the number of third-party apps you use. Each additional app increases your vulnerability to potential breaches.

CrowdStrike Outage

This incident, labeled the largest IT outage in history, was caused by a software developer’s small oversight. Despite extensive checks and balances, this minor error managed to cripple an entire industry. My personal experience with this outage involved a hotel stay where I couldn’t get a key card because the system was down. It was a humorous but telling example of how a single point of failure can have widespread repercussions.

E-commerce Success Stories: Prime Day and Levi’s

On a more positive note, e-commerce continues to thrive. Amazon’s Prime Day raked in $14.2 billion, the highest ever, not just for Amazon but for other merchants too, as confirmed by Adobe Analytics. This success highlights how offering significant discounts and promotions can drive substantial sales.

Another success story comes from Levi’s, which saw a 19% increase in e-commerce revenue after investing in website optimizations. By improving page speed, search functionality, and navigation, Levi’s demonstrated that focused e-commerce investments can yield impressive returns.

Optimizing for the Holiday Season

With the holiday season approaching, it’s vital to ensure your website provides clear and accurate information about delivery times. A recent personal experience highlighted the frustration of not knowing the exact arrival date of a purchase. While many websites offer vague shipping estimates, Amazon sets a high bar by providing precise delivery dates.

To compete, consider tools like ShipperHQ, which can offer reasonably accurate delivery estimates. Although it might not be the prettiest presentation, functionality is paramount. ShipperHQ can significantly enhance customer satisfaction by providing clear shipping timelines.

For more advanced solutions, consider using GeoIP location data to give customers precise delivery estimates based on their location. This level of detail can set your e-commerce site apart and reduce customer service inquiries about delivery times.

Key Factors for Accurate Delivery Estimates

Stock Status

Clearly indicate whether a product is in stock and provide an estimated restock date if it’s not.

Pick and Ship Time

Adjust this estimate based on your busy or slow seasons to ensure accuracy.

Customization Time

For customized products, provide a realistic timeframe considering the complexity of the customization process.

Shipment Time

Use the customer’s zip code to calculate the exact transit time, ensuring they have a clear idea of when to expect their order.

When will my product arrive?

How often do you observe how you interact with other eCommerce websites? Being retrospective can be a game changer. I was recently looking for a rain jacket as a gift for a friend. He was going on a fishing trip this week, and the time between when I decided to make the purchase and when he left was only a few days away.

When this product would arrive was central to my decision.

How many more buyers would purchase if they knew when their purchase would arrive?

Imagine the impact:

  • Conversion rates will bump because customers have the information they need. This will increase even more if you sell gifts or products that can be used as gifts or sell in a B2B space.
  • Customer service will get fewer questions, allowing them to answer other questions faster.

How do we go about this?

Level 1

Start easy. This screenshot is from one of our client’s checkout processes.

This comes directly from ShipStation—no work other than flipping a switch. Is it ideal to have the underscores on each line? Definitely not. But this is a significant step forward. Are there ways to improve this further? Yes! You could have friendly text, like “Next Thursday, the 25th (5 days from today)”. This can be shortened, but what you are paying for is immediately evident.

Level 2

Once you get stability, consider adding this information to the product page.

This will require an app or custom development as this is not native functionality to any significant eCommerce platform.

How do I know the destination ZIP code? You could either have a text field or use GeoIP lookup (available for free from CloudFlare) with a way to correct it, as it will rarely be precise.

Shipping details will be loaded after the rest of the page is loaded.

It doesn’t have to be on the product page. If you offer customization services, you may want to place this information on the cart page, like egrandstand.com

As we navigate the rest of 2024, remember that early preparation and robust security measures are key to e-commerce success. Customers want to know when their product will arrive. This is a great way to compete with giants like Amazon and set yourself apart from other merchants in your space.
