Senior Magento Developer at SwiftOtter
Location and Scenery: I live in central Pennsylvania just outside the Michaux State Forest boundary and traded mowing a lawn for picking up leaves. The area is hilly compared to the western U.S., but high enough in elevation that in winter, if it's raining in the valley, there's a good chance it's snowing at the house. Outside the forest, there's no shortage of small towns, farms, and history with Gettysburg just a short drive away.
Special Skills: I write PHP so clean even the garbage collector gets bored. On a more serious note, I'm always striving to improve my code, learn new techniques, and stay open-minded to better ways of working and architecting solutions.
Fun Fact: For about five years, I lived mostly on the road, traveling to wild places in the U.S. to photograph landscapes and wildlife. Denali National Park is a favorite of mine for being the most accessible wilderness and having minimal trail systems, while Glacier National Park brought some of the most incredible wildlife encounters on trail—grizzlies, wolves, and even a wolverine. My favorite trips were spent chasing fall colors from Denali down to southern Utah, a journey I repeated twice over two consecutive years from mid-August to late-November.
Favorite Tool or Tech: Right now I'm really enjoying the advancements of AI art generation as well as scripting batch processes in Photoshop. PHPStorm and Xdebug are my favorite tools and are daily drivers for me.
What do you like to do to unwind outside of work? Spending time with my family. We take a couple of beach trips each year and spend many weekends at the river boating and enjoying camp life in the summer. I also enjoy working on a large personal Magento project tailored for artists, along with ongoing photographic projects.
Favorite part of being an Otter? The opportunity to work alongside such knowledgeable developers and learn from them, all while maintaining the high-quality standards we set for ourselves.
Short Bio: I got my start in programming back in high school, writing small programs for my TI-83 calculator to help with math tests. Ironically, I still did poorly on those tests because I failed to show my work. After high school, I attended a trade school for photography, where I built my first website and became hooked on web development. While running my wildlife and nature photography business, I taught myself Magento during downtime on the road. I eventually landed at SwiftOtter after losing a camera to a river in Yellowstone and realizing I was burnt out running a business from the road. Working at SwiftOtter has given me the opportunity to grow as a developer, continue learning, and hone my development skills. I am grateful I landed here and have the opportunity to work with such a talented team and work on such highly customized projects.
